Proclaimed by some fans as the Lady Gaga of the 80s, perhaps more accurately Lady Gaga should be described as the Dale Bozzio of the early millennium, for the lead singer and performer of the Missing Persons —with her outlandish hair, self-made outfits and glamorous pop punk persona—consistently wowed and inspired audiences.

Bozzio will be performing in Long Beach this Saturday, fronting the current embodiment of Missing Persons as headliner of Summer and Music (SAM)’s Punk Rock Prom event at the Pike Outlets.

In 1982 with its pop-new wave hit, “Words” from their debut album, Spring Session M, Missing Persons gained early success. The band went on to produce three Top 100 albums during their reign of the 80s, and an array of singles, including “Walking in LA” and “Destination Unknown” that also made it to the Top 100.

“The inspiration for Punk Rock Prom is two-fold: We all know Punk Rock is more than a style of music. It’s an attitude, a choice…a decision to stand up for yourself and your beliefs and say ‘This is who I am,’” SAM co-founder, Ashley Hectus, said in a statement. “Creative self-expression, passion, celebrating our individuality and uniqueness – to me, that’s what it means to be punk rock and I think Long Beach is as punk rock a city as it gets.”

Two Long Beach-based trios will be joining Missing Persons with Mention, the “Bowie-meets-LCD Soundsystem” band of three and the local grunge, post-punk group Spare Parts for Broken Hearts. DJ Dennis Owens will also be joining, spinning good vibes, new waves and soul.

While Punk Rock Prom is indeed a new addition to SAM’s ninth season, it replaces Twisted at the Pike, where bands such as Fartbarf ruled the night with their creepy cool antics. SAM will return for its final event of the 2017 season, Buskerfest on August 19 in the East Village Arts District in Downtown Long Beach.

Punk Rock Prom is free to attend and will take place from 5:00PM to 10:30PM. For more information about SAM, presented by the Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DLBA) and sponsored by MADE By Millworks, interTrend Communications, Port of Long Beach and Shoreline Village, visit the website here.

The Pike Outlets are located at 95 South Pine Avenue.
