To commemorate the Rancho’s transfer from the Bixby family to the City of Long Beach in 1955, the Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site is presenting Back To The 50’s, a celebration of American Rock n’ Roll, Jazz, and Country Music—for free.
The next two events will take place on the fourth Sunday of the month in July and August and are, again, completely free.
Guests are welcome to arrive at 4:30PM for pre-concert picnicking on the picturesque backyard lawn. Music begins at 5:30PM and will continue until 7:00PM.
In July, the series continues with Chet Getz Cool, a tribute to Chet Baker, who helped define the West Coast Cool sound as a trumpet player. The series will also feature Stan Getz, known as ‘The Sound’ for the soft tone of his tenor saxophone. He also advanced the “West Coast Cool” sound, and is best known for his mid-’60s forays into Bossa Nova.
Baker was a fan favorite in Down Beat magazine’s reader poll, beating Miles Davis two years in a row in earning the Best Jazz Vocalist award in 1956. Baker and Getz played together early in their careers and reconnected much later, according to the release.
Anthony Shadduck, a contrabassist and bandleader who’s been working professionally for many years in Southern California, has assembled a team of top-notch players, including Tim Gil as Baker and Alex Sadnik as Getz. They’ll be joined by songwriter, producer, pianist and arranger Adam Bravo on piano and Los Angeles-based drummer Sam Webster.
On August 23, The Walking Phoenixes will resurrect the spirit of the Man in Black, Johnny Cash.
The Summer Concert Series will be held at Rancho Los Cerritos 4600 Virginia Road. High backed chairs are not allowed. Pets, and smoking, are not allowed anywhere on the site. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Limited handicapped parking exists on site, and additional parking is available in an adjacent lot as well as the street.
