Tonight, local band Slushbox is performing at Fingerprints Music as part of an opening night reception for Wake Up, an exhibition of photographs by Jim Coke. The photos were taken of The Doors during a performance in 1967, just before their song Light My Fire rocketed them to stardom. The exhibition, and the recently installed mural, Flying Morrison, are all in celebration of Jim Morrison’s 70th birthday, which is on December 8th.

Slushbox will be performing with the celebrated poet Michael C. Ford, who is a contemporary and long time friend of The Doors. Also performing are Natural Hi-Fi and MOVE.

In this rather epic video interview, Slushbox co-founders Mark Wheeler and Sharon Giarratano talk about the significance of the Sound Recording and Music Production programs at Long Beach City College, and their storied history in a series of band incarnations, including S&M and 3Sum. They also speak, enthusiastically, about tonight’s show at Fingerprints, their two tours of Bulgaria, and Sharon’s musical roots in New Orleans.

The event starts at 7 PM, and runs until 8:30. Fingerprints is located at 420 East 4th Street.
