The Long Beach Camerata Singers have announced that, at its August 11 meeting, the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners voted unanimously to support the choral group’s 2014-15 concert season with a gift of $25,000.

“The Long Beach non-profit community is very fortunate to have the Port as an advocate for our activities,” Jan Hower, President of Camerata Singers’ Board of Directors, said in a statement. Michael Gold, Director of Communications and Community Relations for the Port, said in a statement that “the Port is proud to support the arts in LB.”

The 2014-15 season will be the Camerata Singers’ 49th year of providing Long Beach with outstanding choral music, despite its reputation as one of the city’s best-kept secrets, according to the release. Recently however, the choir has gained more notoriety, allowing it to perform fully orchestrated choral masterpieces in engagements with the Long Beach Symphony, Long Beach Opera and many other revered musical groups.

The Long Beach Camerata Singers season of four concerts begins October 12 with a performance entitled American Tapestry, a presentation of American folk songs and patriotic favorites. The Camerata singers also produce the Long Beach Bach Festival that takes place in March and April.

The Long Beach Camerata Singers are a non-profit, 80-voice choir currently under the artistic direction of Dr. Robert Istad, Director of Choral Studies at CSU Fullerton and Assistant Director of the Pacific Chorale. According to the release, though the group has roots in classical music, contemporary choral works in jazz,  Broadway and popular tunes have been added to broaden audience appeal.
