Sunday’s demonstration in the wake of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis broke down into two distinct parts.

The first, which began a little before 3 p.m., was the march that focused on matters of racial equality and police brutality. That part of the demonstration had broad support from not only those marching but spectators and motorists along the way who shouted and honked their support.

But, later that evening, the second half of the demonstration turned violent, with protesters clashing with police, and criminal, with looters smashing their way into numerous retail stores and restaurants in Downtown Long Beach.

These images, taken in the evening, reflect a city in turmoil.
