On Saturday, July 2, from 10:00AM to 3:00PM Long Beach will likely see its largest congregation of corgis yet, as the expected one thousand plus low-riding fuzzy buddies take to Rosie’s Dog Beach for So Cal Corgi Beach Day.
To be held over 4th of July weekend, the corgis and their humans can enter the Corgi Talent Contest, Pawtriotic Pet & Pawtriotic Corgi and Human Duo Costume Contest, Best Momo (aka Corgi Butt) Contest and Corgi Limbo Competition, according to the release, while a brand new event, the Corgi Watermelon Eating Contest is sure to be a hit.
“We expect this to be our biggest turnout ever, so we’re shooting for a new record of over a thousand corgis,” said Kelly McLemore, the Corgi Beach Day co-organizer who brought the inaugural event to Long Beach last summer. “We’ve come pretty close. Some have gotten to 850, 875, so this time I’m pretty sure we’re going to break one thousand.”
Everyone is invited to the family friendly full day of activities, where adoption information, corgi-centric contests, pet care demos, free giveaways, food trucks, prizes, a new and improved Bubble Pavilion and more will be set up on the sand.
“We love corgis and I think the corgi community is really unique,” McLemore continued. “They’re a tight-knit group of people and it is a lot of work, between myself and my husband, but it makes it worth it just afterwards when people tell us how much fun they had and how much it cheers them up.”
McLemore told the Long Beach Post that someone had called her this morning to plan a marriage proposal at the upcoming event, a first for the So Cal Corgi Beach Day extravaganza.
“The day after Corgi Beach Day we’re beat, but it makes it all worth it, the friends that we’ve made and the people having so much fun,” she concluded.
