Virtually Pets

Sterling
We tried to choose among the photos of Sterling that this rescuer sent and finally decided that we had to do two of them — one for his appearance (gorgeous gunmetal silver) and the other to show — well, let’s say that he’ll show you a good time. He’s obviously one in a million and has a heck of a lot of energy. He’s healthy as a horse, is about 2 years old, weighs about 65 pounds, has been neutered and vaccinated and loves people and dogs (females only). Sterling would do great with an active person or a yard to run around in. Send an email [email protected] to meet him.

Sasha
Twelve-year-old Sasha’s mom has had him since he was a pup and now has to move from her home. She cannot take Sasha with her. Sasha is a champagne-colored shih tzu-poodle mix who is social with other animals and good with kids. He’s not a barker, and is very sweet. He’s been neutered and is healthy other than a few noncontagious warts (we all have those). If you’re interested in spending some golden years with a golden buddy, call 562-310-8273.

Cleopatra
This is a horrible photo of a horrible situation, but this is why we write this column — to show the effects of neglect and abuse. Cleopatra is a shih tzu — age not given, but she is a senior — who was delivered at a shelter for euthanizing by someone who said he didn’t want to have anything more to do with her. She is now under the mentorship of the Bumper Foundation and Mary’s Little Lambs. She is presently undergoing treatment from two canine specialists: an ophthalmologist and a dentist, and it ain’t cheap. Donations are needed for her care. Send an e-mail to [email protected] for ways to help and other information. This little girl may need a home when she’s feeling better.

Adopt and Shop Featured Pets

Our last article introduced you to a new type of venue for adopting shelter pets. Adopt and Shop offers a friendly, welcoming pet store atmosphere for adopting shelter animals, with all of the accoutrements you could want and none of the negatives, like animals with dubious parentage from mothers who’ve been literally bred to death. The following four felines and fidos are waiting for you at their shop at 353 Lakewood Center Mall in Lakewood, 562-531-2871. Shop hours are Tues. – Sun., noon – 6 p.m. Click here to see more animals ready to go home.

Mork

Mindy
Mork and Mindy are mellow adult female cats who love affection. They’re great with other cats and have the sweetest personalities. Since they’re so bonded, these best friends must be adopted together. The good thing about them is that if you want to spend a night on the town with them, they have their own tuxedos, á Marlene Dietrich.

Pippa
And she’s a real pip — a firecracker! Pippa’s a spunky, energetic adult female miniature pinscher. She’s outgoing and social and would do best in an active home.

Varda
Varda, an adult female terrier mix, is a mellow, friendly girl who’s looking for the right home. She’s playful and gets along with most dogs. She appears to be housebroken and would be a good family dog.

Pet Projects

Spay/Neuter License Plates (exclusive to state of California)
There’s still time to preorder the California Spay/Neuter license plate designed by actor Pierce Brosnan. All proceeds from the plates will provide funding for free or low-cost pet-altering surgeries in shelters across California and help raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering to reduce the pet overpopulation. Visit CASPayPlate.com for information and ordering.

ACS Low-cost Vaccination and Licensing Clinics
Low-cost pet clinics are scheduled every month in Long Beach to provide residents with a one-stop shop for vaccination, microchipping and licensing services. The next Animal Care Services clinic will be held Saturday, June 11, at Cesar Chavez Park, 401 Golden Ave. Clinics will provide low-cost vaccinations and licensing to Long Beach residents and pets. No reservation is necessary. Credit cards and checks are accepted for licensing, but only cash is accepted for vaccinations. A state-licensed vet from Southern California Veterinary Vaccine Clinic will be onsite to provide the shots, and residents can process their license renewals onsite. Click here and here for schedule, services available and a full list of prices.
