Virtually Pets

This weekend sees two rescue-related events, one a fundraiser for an incredible (I’m not exaggerating) dog rescue and the other for the scores of kittens and former kittens that were born during kitten season and now need good homes. Both rescues are 501(c)(3) nonprofits.

Here are a few previews:

West Coast Animal Rescue (WeCARe)/Sparky and the Gang

E-mail: [email protected]

Allow two to three days for a response as the organization is all-volunteer run and they have day jobs.

WeCARe is stationed in front of the Seal Beach PetSmart, 12341 Seal Beach Boulevard most Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00PM and the Long Beach Petco, 6500 Pacific Coast Highway. most Sundays from 11:00AM to 3:00PM and is present at many local pet- and adoption-related events. Please e-mail them in advance if there is a specific dog you are interested in.

LunaBell

Miss Luna is a medium-size female border collie/chow chow mix. She’s 10 years old and has been spayed and vaccinated. Miss Luna’s owners moved and left her and her son on the street, matted and dirty with hundreds of stickers stuck in her fur! You should have seen the “before” photo. But she’s very gentle and sweet, and is looking for a loving home to call her own. She weighs about 38 pounds and loves to go for a walks. She deserves to spend her golden years with a nice family who appreciates what a special dog she truly is!

Lon Chaney Jr.—really! This little Wolfman is actually a Norwich terrier/Yorkie mix, has been neutered and has all his shots. He was rescued from the streets by his foster parents after two days of convincing him that they meant no harm. After sleeping under cars and eating whatever he could find, Lon was ready for something better! His foster parents brought him home, got all the motor oil out of his coat, and gave him some food. He was safe, and he knew it. He thanked them by offering his paw and rubbing his head on their laps. Lon’s foster family consists of two humans, two dogs and four cats; and Lon gets along with all of them. He is starting to enjoy his walks more each day. He especially loves being petted and scratched behind the ears. He’s come a long way in just a couple of weeks. Proof that a little love and compassion go a long way.

To adopt Lon Chaney Jr., contact his foster mom at [email protected].

Zoey’s Place Rescue https://www.facebook.com/zoeysplacerescue

Benjamin is a five-year-old orange tabby found, abandoned by his owners in Huntington Beach. He is the sweetest cat ever—very cuddly and vocal and only asks to sit on your lap all day.

Eva

Eva is a four-month-old calico diva. Her eyeliner eyes are just to die for! She was pulled by our rescue from Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) along with her siblings at two months and has had a long road to recovery. But now, she’s a spunky girl with a very playful, loving personality and loves to torture her siblings. She definitely needs a play partner so she doesn’t get lonely.

COCO

Coco was also pulled from ACS along with her three siblings. Now a year old, Coco is a very sweet and playful cat, patiently waiting for someone to take her home after all her siblings have been adopted.

Dog Spay Neuter

Fix Long Beach (FLB) Spay/Neuter Clinic
Dogs only, Saturday, August 22, 7:00AM–4:00PM, Houghton Park, 6301 North Myrtle Avenue (near Jordan High School), Long Beach
Free to qualifying residents

The grassroots free spay/neuter organization Fix Long Beach aims to fix 75 to 85 dogs this Saturday! Guidelines are as follows:

  • NO dogs from rescue groups or individual rescuers.
  • Low-income Long Beach residents only! If you don’t qualify (annual salary $30,000 or lower), please Google “low cost spay/neuter” along with your zip code, and have your pet fixed at one of the suggested clinics.
  • Saturday’s schedule is almost fully booked, but standbys are welcome. Vouchers will be given to any attendee whose dog isn’t fixed.
  • If you have called or made a previous appointment please check your voice mail for messages (be sure that it’s set up). You must call back to confirm your appointment or your spot will be given away.
  • If you are 15 minutes late for your appointment, your spot will be given to someone waiting on standby. If you fail to show up for two consecutive appointments, you will be denied future service.

Fix Long Beach also offers these services form 9AM–4PM:

  • Low cost vaccines for dogs and cats $10; cash only
  • Low-cost flea meds for dog and cats $10; cash only
  • Nail trim $5, cash only
  • Free microchips for pets of Long Beach residents
  • Free supplies for anyone that gets their pets fixed

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (323) 413-7729

When you come, bring proof of income and Long Beach residency (these events are for Long Beach residents only.) Whether you come as standby or with an appointment, do not give your pet anything to eat or drink after 12:01AM. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers that are specifically pet carriers! No paper bags or suitcases, please! There are no walls in the park, and we want you to ensure your pet’s safety! If you don’t own a carrier, pet supply stores like Petco and PetSmart carry inexpensive cardboard ones; they run on the average of $8.

Fix Long Beach also has a wish list for pet items to give to our client as a thank-you for helping to lower our shelter euthanasia rate and prevent the birth of more unwanted kittens and puppies. For the next event, FLB needs sturdy leashes, dog toys, small and extra-small harnesses, and both dry and wet food for cats and dogs. Click the link to donate items, or bring them to the event if you find a better deal!

Let’s continue to help make Long Beach no kill, one pet at a time!

222 E. Broadway, third Thursday of every month, 6–8PM

Join P&P for their monthly mixer, and enjoy special treats, toasts, and plenty of in-store tail-wagging. Mutt Mingles are a great way for your dog to learn valuable social skills. It’s a chance for them to experience and interact in a social setting with food, drink and plenty of other distractions! It’s important for your dog to learn how to behave around other dogs and people so that they’ll be the stars of the dog park and the dog beach. The indoor facility provides for a very comfortable setting and fun atmosphere. Dogs may be off-leash if supervised closely by their owners. For their protection, we lock the front door so dogs are safe from the street traffic.
