Virtually Pets

Ellie

When considering animal rescues, what comes up is a safe haven for abandoned, unwanted pets who will, it’s hoped, be eventually adopted and live good lives. But a rescue is by definition a rescue, and there are a lot of them in Long Beach and everywhere else that define rescue in a lot of ways. One of them is Live Love Pet Care and Animal Rescue Services here in town.

In February, a woman saw this sweet dog get hit by a car as she was trying to cross the street at a busy intersection. This good Samaritan immediately called Long Beach Animal Care Services, but they were on other calls and couldn’t show up for a long time.

“She called us in tears asking for help,” wrote Live Love founder Emily Haden on her Facebook page. “We requested that she immediately rush Ellie to our vet, VCA Lakewood Animal Hospital, as she appeared to be in shock and need to be stabilized right away.”

Ellie, for that’s what the rescuers had named her, wasn’t in great shape, with multiple pelvic fractures, a dislocation on her right side, broken ribs, and a hemothorax—a buildup of blood and fluid in the lungs. But Haden and the rescuer knew that she was someone’s doggie. In a touching detail, she’d been carrying a squeaky toy and had a worn-out collar with no ID. The rescuer went to every length to find the owner, but to no avail. Her injuries were weakening her, so Live Love, with support from partners at Zoey’s Place Rescue, took Ellie under their wing and get her veterinary assistance. She appears to be only 4 years old and has lots of love and life to give, and the surgery will be expensive, so the organization is asking for help with the hefty $8,000 bill. VCA’s head surgeon, Dr. Denise Bierens, says that she can repair her pelvis and that Ellie can make a full recover. If you’d like to help save the life of this dear dog, read further details here and click the donate button.

And of course, Live Love has dogs for rescue as well. To adopt or foster one of these dogs, e-mail [email protected]. To see who else is available, visit their Facebook page. See Mark Your Calendars for events that the Live Love lovables will attend.

Mya

Mya is a cattle dog/pit bull mix, approximately 12 years old. She was rescued from the Carson shelter just in time to save her life. She is a smart, sweet girl with a heart of gold for children! She’s very mellow and is great on a leash and well mannered. She’s also been spayed and vaccinated. Mya just wants a cozy bed in her forever home to enjoy her golden years! Please share to make her dream come true!

Milo and Scout

Milo, a black-and-white Chihuahua/terrier mix, was rescued from the Riverside shelter. He’s Live Love’s one-eyed wonder! He’s anywhere from 4 to 6 years old. He has “piglet personality”—he snorts and snores, and he’s mellow as can be and just wants to be on your lap getting love! Look at the smile he’s sharing with Scout!  to brighten your day!

Scout is a white-and-tan whippet/beagle/terrier mix, rescued from Long Beach Animal Care Services. He’s 3 to 5years old and is a spunky social dude, as you can see. Scout is the first one to make friends with all the pups in Live Love’s rescue pack and rotates his face cleaning for each of them—adorable! He can be shy with humans at first, but he’s always cordial, and once you get his trust, he’s ready to cuddle up for a movie or play whenever you are.

Grand Opening of Pet Food Express’s new location and the Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) Cat Adoption Center

Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13, Pet Food Express, 4220 Long Beach Boulevard (near the new Trader Joe’s location), Long Beach, Adoptions: 11AM–3PM; ribbon cutting at 1PM Saturday

Free to attend

The new Pet Food Express, which features high-quality pet food, toys and accessories, is teaming up with Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) to present what they say is the “largest pet adoption event in Long Beach,” with more than 125 pets available. There will be puppies, dogs, kittens, cats and more available from more than 15 animal rescue groups and shelters, and Pet Food Express and ACS are aiming to adopt out as many pets as possible in one weekend.

The event will also feature stunt dog performances at noon, 2:00PM and 3:00PM; free self-serve pet washes (to run through March); pet food and treat vendors giving out samples; and 20 percent off anything in the store.

The two entities are also celebrating the grand opening of a state-of-the-art cat adoption center inside the new Pet Food Express store in Long Beach. The center will house up to 12 cats and kittens available for adoption.

“This new cat adoption center inside Pet Food Express is an amazing opportunity for the cats that come to our shelter to find a furever home,” said Ted Stevens, LBACS manager. “With the shelter being located on the east side of Long Beach, this adoption center brings opportunities to the residents in other areas of the city to find new loving pets in a convenient location closer to home.”

Guidelines for FLB clinics are as follows:

  • Low-income Long Beach residents only unless you have a pit bull! (We offer free spay/neuter for pitties in surrounding cities.) If you don’t qualify (annual salary $30,000 or lower), please Google “low cost spay/neuter” along with your zip code, and have your pet fixed at one of the suggested clinics.
  • Book an appointment ASAP. Standbys are welcome. Vouchers will be given to any attendee whose pet cannot be served that day.
  • If you have called or made a previous appointment, please check your voice mail for messages (be sure that it’s set up). You must call back to confirm your appointment or your spot will be given away.
  • If you are 15 minutes late for your appointment, your spot will be given to someone waiting on standby. If you fail to show up for two consecutive appointments, you will be denied future service.

Fix Long Beach also offers the following services from 9AM–4PM:

  • low-cost vaccines for dogs and cats $10 per shot, cash only!
  • low-cost flea meds for dog and cats $10 per dose/application, cash only!

  • free supplies for anyone that gets their pets fixed!

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (323) 413-7729

When you come, bring proof of income and Long Beach residency (these events are for Long Beach residents only.) Whether you come as standby or with an appointment, do not give your pet anything to eat or drink after 12:01AM. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers that are specifically pet carriers! No paper bags or suitcases, please! There are no walls in the park, and we want you to ensure your pet’s safety! If you don’t own a carrier, pet supply stores like Petco and PetSmart carry inexpensive cardboard ones; they run on the average of $8.

Fix Long Beach also has a wish list for pet items to give to our client as a thank-you for helping to lower our shelter euthanasia rate and prevent the birth of more unwanted kittens and puppies.

Bird ReleaseBird Release Project
South Bay Wildlife Rehab, at driver’s convenience

Bye-bye, birdie! South Bay Wildlife Rehab needs rides for hawks, owls and falcons. No training is required—just sign up on the email list and reply to emails asking for help. Releasing birds of prey is rewarding and educational!

Some of the birds were captured at local airports and need long rides—150 miles plus—to lessen the chances of them returning to the airports and causing more trouble. There are also injured and orphaned birds that need to be returned to their natural environment; these are specific locations.

Rides are almost always needed, so if you’re planning a road trip of at least 150 miles and would enjoy a feathered passenger for part of the way, drop us an email and let us know where and when you’re going. Once you sign up for our email list, you’ll receive emails when birds need to hitch a ride. Contact Ann Lynch, director, at [email protected], or Karin West, ranch manager, at [email protected].

It’s a chance for them to experience and interact in a social setting with food, drink and plenty of other distractions! It’s important for your dog to learn how to behave around other dogs and people so that they’ll be the stars of the dog park and the dog beach. The indoor facility provides for a very comfortable setting and fun atmosphere. Dogs may be off-leash if supervised closely by their owners. For their protection, we lock the front door so dogs are safe from the street traffic.
