Archie

Archie came to the shelter already neutered—his owner had taken great care of him and had given him some basic training. He’d loved Archie very much but was no longer able to care for him. Archie’s only 3 years old and loves attention and going on walks. Need an arch-buddy? Ask for ID#A551312.

LUcy August 14 Pet of the Week

With a cat named Lucy, the most obvious thing to say is—well, the ACS staff does love Lucy! And you will, too! Lucy’s owners surrendered her because they said that they had no time for her. And the girl’s only a year old and has plenty of time! She’s been spayed and will make someone who does have time a very happy companion. Ask for ID#A553435.

Elmira spcala

Butter spcala

Butter seems to be saying, “Hark! Is that a can pop-top I hear? Is a refrigerator door opening? Is that my friend at the door?” Butter will spread her way across your lap and heart. If you’d love to take this beauty home, ask for ID#15-05407.

Terri Steuben is the author of the well-received Secrets of a Pet Whisperer, a guidebook on how to communicate with your cat, dog or whoever may share your hearth and heart. She’ll be signing her new release at two of Long Beach’s independent bookstores this week. Tails of Triumph has been 10 years in the making and has come out in time for the 10th year of the remembrance of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The book is a heartfelt and often heartbreaking account of Steuben’s time as a team leader with The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) during its effort to rescue as many cats and dogs from the devastating effects of the storm. Steuben’s account takes the readers into the scenes as well as into the minds of the animals as she makes use of her gifts of communication.

The Gatsby appearance will include a talk by Steuben on pets and disaster preparedness.

Apostrophe Books will also feature a signing on the following day of Stroll and Savor, Aug. 20. True Tails from the Dog Park, written by Max and Luther with some assistance from their owners, gives tips on dog park behavior and some illustrative lessons from the dogs themselves.

Dogs only, Saturday, Aug. 22, 7AM–4PM, Houghton Park, 6301 N. Myrtle Ave. (near Jordan High School), Long Beach
Free to qualifying residents

If you or someone you know earns an annual salary of $30,000 or less, sign up for an appointment here. You can also come on the date of the appointment as standby; there’s no guarantee of a procedure, but you can make one for the next event or take a voucher for a local clinic. When you come, bring proof of income and Long Beach residency (these events are for Long Beach residents only.) Whether you come as standby or with an appointment, do not give your pet anything to eat or drink after 12:01AM. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers that are specifically pet carriers! No paper bags or suitcases, please! There are no walls in the park, and we want you to ensure your pet’s safety! If you don’t own a carrier, pet supply stores like Petco and PetSmart carry inexpensive cardboard ones; they run on the average of $8.

Fix Long Beach also has a wish list for pet items to give to our client as a thank-you for helping to lower our shelter euthanasia rate and prevent the birth of more unwanted kittens and puppies. For the next event, FLB needs sturdy leashes, dog toys, small and extra-small harnesses, and both dry and wet food for cats and dogs. Click the link to donate items, or bring them to the event if you find a better deal!

Let’s continue to help make Long Beach no kill, one pet at a time!
