Virtually Pets

On Saturday, Pet Food Express in Bixby Knolls will have its monthly adoption event (see Mark Your Calendars). These little doggies from the shelter are so deserving of placement in a forever home.

November’s the month in which gratitude is traditionally expressed, and it works both ways when you take in a pet, especially one that was formerly neglected or abandoned. As theologian Karl Barth was quoted (in a Mutts comic, of coursh), “Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.” Pass the peanut butter treats, please. With gravy. No stuffing, please.

Addison

Addison is a smooth-coated female Chihuahua mix, already spayed and ready to go home. She’s about 12 years old but still has lots of years left. What’s Thanksgiving without a spry granny? Ask for ID#A579379.

Manita

Manita means “little hand” in Spanish, and this girl is so named because she has only three of them. She’s about 2 years old. She was born without one of her front legs, but the staff and animal community who come to play with her say that this doesn’t seem to slow her down. She’s sociable with people, pets and kids. She’s available to go home as well, but Live Love Pet Care and Animal Rescue is also seeking a foster for her and will provide supplies and medical care. If you’re interested in fostering her, contact [email protected] for details.

VEt DayParade Route

Walk for the War Dogs with FOLBA at the Veterans Day Parade

Saturday, November 5, 9:30AM (parade steps off at 10:00AM), Atlantic Avenue and Harding Street, Long Beach

Free event

Just as civilians show their support for and honor veterans every year (that’s correct, it’s never enough), animal advocates and their dogs attend parades like ours in Long Beach to remember the dogs and other animals that died in service to our country. Friends of Long Beach Animals (FOLBA) will be bringing their dogs to march in the Veterans Day parade, and they invite anyone either with or without a furry buddy to march along with them. Come early in order to find a parking space, be sure that you have water on hand for you and your dog, and mind the advisory—if you feel that your dog may be nervous around parade noise and horses, it’s best that he or she stay home. See above graphics for information.

This year, it’s all returning—including Hop Kong Phooey, the aforementioned IPA—with all the photo booths, live music, vendor tables with free samples, performances and adoption rescues.
