Virtually Pets

Saturday, Sept. 12 will see the inaugural Dogs of Downtown Long Beach home in on the Promenade. Don’t have a dog? Along with the activities, merch booths and great tastes for dogs and their human companions, Long Beach Animal Care Services will be there with adoptable pooches. Please note that any of these candidates may have been adopted between today and Saturday, so if one strikes your fancy, hightail it to the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village at 7700 East Spring Street near El Dorado Park. Be sure to enter through the shelter side at City of Long Beach Animal Care Services.

Jonas is a sweet 8-year-old neutered male poodle. He has a soft nature, loves attention, and will quietly lean into you. Jonas gets along with other dogs. Ask for ID#A555056.

Charlie is a 5-year-old Parson Russell terrier mix whose humans had to move and could not take him. Nonetheless, he seems to find plenty to laugh his head off about. He’s a happy, playful, independent guy who gets along with other dogs. Ask for ID#A412856.

Fruit Loops is all fun and games! He doesn’t stop! He’s a very playful and energetic 4-year-old Chi, so if you have an energy level to match, he’s your guy! Ask for ID#A554738.

Sherlock is such a great dog! This 3-year-old boxer is so calm and mellow—just a cool fellow! Loves to walk, and stays right by your side, just like his namesake and Dr. Watson. Ask for ID#A552709.

Cindy’s a little over a year old. As you can see, she’s a cuddly little girl! She’s a Jack Russell terrier mix, so you know she has a lot of spunk. Ask for ID#A551922.

Dogs of Downtown Long Beach

The Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) will launch its first-ever event dedicated to our other family members—dogs, of course! Dogs of Downtown will take over the Promenade at this event as an opportunity to not just connect dog owners in a unique way but to also celebrate the many dog-friendly businesses and patios that make DTLB one of the most pet-friendly places in Southern California. For this event, Beachwood BBQ has crafted its own brew, Hop Kong Phooey (for you, not the dog), and all of the profits from the beer will go toward the nonprofit Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Also participating will be downtown pet-friendly businesses including Pussy and Pooch, Bark Bark Daycare and Grooming, Soggy Dog pet washing, Pine Animal Hospital and Pawsitively Long Beach pet groomer. There will be all sorts of treats activities for dogs, and dogs are encouraged to attend but not mandatory. No dog? There will be adoptions going on as well. Latest information available here.

Fix Long Beach (FLB) Spay/Neuter Clinic

The grassroots free spay/neuter organization Fix Long Beach invites you to make an appointment for your unfixed cat! Guidelines are as follows:

• No cats from rescue groups or individual rescuers.
• Low-income Long Beach residents only! If you don’t qualify (annual salary $30,000 or lower), please Google “low cost spay/neuter” along with your zip code, and have your pet fixed at one of the suggested clinics.
• Book an appointment ASAP. Standbys are welcome. Vouchers will be given to any attendee whose cat isn’t fixed.
• If you have called or made a previous appointment, please check your voice mail for messages (be sure that it’s set up). You must call back to confirm your appointment or your spot will be given away.
• If you are 15 minutes late for your appointment, your spot will be given to someone waiting on standby. If you fail to show up for two consecutive appointments, you will be denied future service.
• Fix Long Beach also offers the following services from 9:00AM–4:00PM:
  • Low-cost vaccines for dogs and cats $10, cash only.
  • Low-cost flea meds for dog and cats $10, cash only.
  • Nail trim $5, cash only.
  • Free microchips for pets of Long Beach residents.
  • Free supplies for anyone that gets their pets fixed.

When you come, bring proof of income and Long Beach residency (these events are for Long Beach residents only.) Whether you come as standby or with an appointment, do not give your pet anything to eat or drink after 12:01AM. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers that are specifically pet carriers! No paper bags or suitcases, please. There are no walls in the park, and we want you to ensure your pet’s safety. If you don’t own a carrier, pet supply stores like Petco and PetSmart carry inexpensive cardboard ones; they run on the average of $8.

Fix Long Beach also has a wish list for pet items to give to our client as a thank-you for helping to lower our shelter euthanasia rate and prevent the birth of more unwanted kittens and puppies. For the next event, FLB needs sturdy leashes, harnesses in XS, S, L and XL, dog collars in all sizes, and both dry and wet food for cats and dogs. Pet owners must be 18 years or older. All pets must be on leashes or in carriers. Only healthy and non-pregnant animals will be vaccinated. If you have a prior rabies vaccine certificate, license tag or license renewal notice for your pet, please bring it with you to the clinic. Vaccination and microchip services are provided for pets residing in any city. Licensing service is provided for residents within our jurisdiction: Long Beach, Signal Hill, Cerritos, Los Alamitos and Seal Beach.

Kitty Hall

Kittens and cats from Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) will lobby city hall for new homes—in the City Hall lobby, of course. Join Mayor Robert Garcia at the inaugural Kitty Hall—an adoption and resource fair at Long Beach City Hall. Feline representatives from ACS will be available for adoption, and our animal care team will be present to answer questions and provide spay and neuter vouchers. We want to encourage adoptions and hope that you will join us for this fun event. Kitty Hall will be located on the first floor of City Hall in the lobby.

spcaLA September 2015 Foster Class

Turtle and Tortoise Expo

Volunteers Needed for the Friends of the El Dorado Dog Park Fifth Annual Holiday Bone-anza

Anyone interested in helping out at the Holiday Bone-anza that benefits Friends of the El Dorado Dog Park is encouraged to come to first of several volunteer-coordination meetings. Join P&P for their monthly mixer, and enjoy special treats, toasts, and plenty of in-store tail-wagging. Mutt Mingles are a great way for your dog to learn valuable social skills. It’s a chance for them to experience and interact in a social setting with food, drink and plenty of other distractions! It’s important for your dog to learn how to behave around other dogs and people so that they’ll be the stars of the dog park and the dog beach. The indoor facility provides for a very comfortable setting and fun atmosphere. Dogs may be off-leash if supervised closely by their owners. For their protection, we lock the front door so dogs are safe from the street traffic.
