ExeneCervenka

This Friday night at 8PM, legendary singer, songwriter, artist and author Exene Cervenka will be performing at The Mirage Cafe in Bixby Knolls as part of the monthly First Fridays Long Beach art walk festivities. The Mirage event is hosted by local luminary Michelle Mangione, who will be joining Exene on stage for an intimate performance, including “Following Orders,” a song the two cowrote.

Although Cervenka is perhaps best known from her time in the seminal L.A. punk band, X, she’s also an accomplished, if modest, visual artist whose work has been exhibited on both coasts. Some of that work will be on display, and for sale, at the Mirage.

Speaking with Cervenka is an intense and surreal experience. She has an agile mind, and she speaks with passion about politics, culture, science, art, the foibles of modern medicine, corporate greed, revolution, and complacency. In our conversation, which took place by phone yesterday, her most potent and catylizing statement was, “How can you sleep at night knowing that you’re killing people by working for a living?” Don’t take my word for it. Listen for yourself.

[Note: Some salty language is used. If salty language bothers you, don’t listen.]
