The community is invited to not only revel in the Broadway corridor to be closed to motorists this Saturday, but to kick off the Beach Streets Downtown event at 10:00AM in front of Bixby Park.
“Beach Streets Downtown will open up the Broadway corridor for a day of fun, excitement and new discoveries,” stated Mayor Robert Garcia. “We’d love to see as many people as possible enjoying bicycling, walking, or roller skating with their friends and neighbors.”
Free entertainment and activities will include a block party, several concerts, yoga classes, giveaways, a community festival, kid’s zones, food tastings, a canine agility course, bike tuning stations, a photo booth, the Aquarium on Wheels and much more, including programming by the Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA), according to the release.
The public can also sign up for a membership and use the bicycles from the city’s recently implemented bike share program. Those arriving without a two-wheeled way to ride can hop on a Long Beach Bike Share bike for the first time.
“We’ll have 100 bicycles available at 10 stations to start, so there’s no excuse not to participate,” stated Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal.

“I’m proud to once again support an incredible event that gets people outdoors to explore their city,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe in a statement. “Beach Streets is a great opportunity for residents to visit a local small business or taste a new restaurant. Exploring a neighborhood on foot or on a bike allows you to see the nooks and crannies of a community that you would otherwise miss while driving in a car.”
Open Street events promote innovative strategies for achieving environmental, social, economic, and public health goals by giving the streets to cyclists, pedestrians, and other modes of non-motorized transportation users.
