History buffs and enthusiasts unite!
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site presents Remembering the Civil War: Perspectives on Race, Place and Movement, a five-part Saturday morning lecture series featuring renowned scholars who brought unique insights to the tumultuous era.
The series will conclude this Saturday with a lively presentation by Gene Dermody, retired history professor, actor, author and playwright.
He will reprise his popular “living history” performance as Reverend George W. Hathaway who, prior to moving to Long Beach in 1877 to join his daughters, had served in the Union Army as a Chaplain, was involved in the abolitionist movement and whose home in Maine served as one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad.
According to the announcement, Dermody taught United States History at Cerritos College for 35 years and created courses in African American and Women’s history.
The lecture series is part of an ongoing effort by the Rancho to present low-cost and free programming that expands attendees’ understanding of California history.
The lecture will begin at 10:00AM and last 90 minutes, including time for audience questions.
Tickets are $7 and $5 for students who bring a current school-issued identification. Reservations are not required, but encouraged due to limited seating. Please call 562.206.2040 to RSVP. Tickets are payable at the door.
