Take a break next month and burn some calories in a 5K, 1K, and toddler run at Newcomb Academy’s seventh annual fundraising event, “Run Like It’s Recess,” on Sunday, November 13, at El Dorado Park.

According to event organizers, Run Like It’s Recess is an all-ages event with participants in past races who are as old as 84, to toddlers younger than one. Families and friends are welcome to join in the race and the top three finishers of each gender and age group will receive medals.

Event founder Frank Coleman, who is a Newcomb parent and avid marathoner, said “Run Like It’s Recess” draws more than 400 participants annually. Coleman created the event to draw local communities and the school together mainly for a fun, healthy activity, the release stated. There was especially one scenario during the toddler run years ago that captured his attention.

“There was this little guy at the start line,” Coleman stated. “The race started, he’s just standing there and won’t go. His dad is in front of him trying to get him to go. He’s calling his name, nothing. The dad takes out a Tupperware container with cheese puffs in it. The dad started walking backwards and the little guy kept following him with his arms out trying to get cheese puffs!”

The race not only helps fund Newcomb’s school programs, but is described by event organizers as the “perfect course” for anyone wanting to seek a personal record or those that just want a scenic tour of El Dorado Park.

“Run Like It’s Recess” will begin its 5K run at 9:00AM, 1K run at 10:15AM, and toddler run at 10:45AM. The 1K and toddler run will finish with an inflatable slide and all participants, including spectators, are welcome to join an on-site pancake breakfast after the races.

Entry fees consist of $30 for 5K, $15 for 1K, and $10 for the toddler run. Participants 10 and younger will receive participation medals. Those who register before October 28 will receive a race T-shirt. All proceeds will go towards Newcomb’s Parent-Teacher Student Association, student field trips, teacher supplies, and other needs not met by district funds.

You can register online or through a downloadable registration form as an individual or team. El Dorado Park is located at 7550 East Spring Street. For more details about the event, click here
