12:05am | The fourth annual Pink Party, which benefits The Center’s Mentoring Youth Through Empowerment Program, kicked off Gay Pride weekend in Long Beach last Friday night.

The highlight of the party begins on stage about an hour in when drag queens take the runway lip-syncing to predictable gay standards meshed with wholly unexpected tunes that incite roars of laughter from the audience.

Throw in some local politicians, a Pink Hair station hosted by The Den Salon, the Hotel Maya Hookah Lounge, a Face & Body Painting booth, and a hundred or so kids wildly gyrating to the music provided by DJ Lezlee, and you have a party worthy of the city’s Gay Pride Festival’s launch.
