Long Beach artist group, FLOOD, as a newly formed 501 ( c ) 3, has officially become Long Beach FLOOD, Inc. Preferring to be referred to simply as FLOOD, the group is best known for producing the annual SoundWalk event, now in its sixth year, held in the East Village Arts District of Downtown Long Beach. SoundWalk2009, taking place on the evening of October 3rd, is a one-night event of sound installations by over 50 local and international sound artists that is situated in various indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the East Village.
It has been FLOOD’s aim to raise awareness as well as engender an appreciation for alternative artistic practices by exposing audiences, along with the larger community, to aesthetic sensibilities and innovative approaches that exist outside those of the contemporary mainstream. FLOOD has been producing installation projects for the last six years and is interested in testing the limits of artistic expression through collaboration and experimentation within a variety of artistic genres. Current members of FLOOD are Kamran Assadi, Frauke von der Horst, Shelley RuggThorp, Shea M Gauer, and Marco Schindelmann.
FLOOD’s projects have been mostly a labor of love over the years, supported in part by local business organizations and individuals. Becoming a non-profit will open up many more financial opportunities to FLOOD, such as being able to apply for grants. To enable an event such as SoundWalk to grow and evolve, financial support is needed to pay for artist stipends, equipment, space rental, and marketing, to name a few. Additionally, in order to fund projects that at times may require cutting edge technology, or to be able to bring in artists who are at the forefront of alternative artistic genres, funds are required. To that end, FLOOD is holding a fundraiser this Sunday, September 27, from 4-7 pm at the Second City Council Gallery and Performance Space. The public is invited to attend. The fundraiser features a Silent Auction and BBQ for a Suggested Donation of $5 to $50. Those who cannot attend, and would like to make a donation may mail it to:
