Gabriel Dawe
11:00am | The annual Technology, Entertainment, and Design [TED] conference wrapped up last Friday after a week of intensive discussions and presentations by innovative thinkers, artists, and scientists from around the world.
Prior to the opening of TED 2012, artist Gabriel Dawe was invited to install a new work in the lobby of the Long Beach Terrace Theater. The work, titled Plexus C2, consists of a colorful matrix of sewing thread stretched between stairway columns. Dawe and his team spent about 80 man hours to complete the installation.
The piece was intended to be temporary, and removed at the end of the conference. Because of its overwhelmingly positive reception, however, the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and SMG, the management company that runs the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, decided to work with Dawe to make it a permanent fixture in the theatre’s lobby.
In this video, Dawe speaks about the work, and his experience at TED. Also, Charlie Beirne, the newly appointed General Manager of the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, speaks about why they decided to keep it.
