bicycledriveinA soft summer breeze. The smell of freshly popped popcorn. A stream of light from an outdoor movie projector, catching dust before hitting the white screen.

The nostalgic era of drive-in movies may have wrapped up its final scene long ago, but Summer and Music looks to bring back childhood memories with its first-ever Bicycle Drive-In event on Saturday. An outdoor film screening of The Triplets of Belleville will take place after a live concert in the parking lot across the street from Fingerprints Music on Saturday at 6PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs while rolling in on their two-wheeled modes of transportation–bikes.

The idea to hold a film screening along with live music came from a conversation between local musician Micael Pradon and Fingerprints owner Rand Foster.

“He was talking about how cool it would be to have something that had both the live music side and a film screening,” Foster recalled from a chat with Pradon, the Matteran Ghost guitarist who has incorporated video elements into live performances before.

Along with other acts like songstress trio The Dovelles, and Django Reinhardt-influenced Hedgehog Swing, Matteran Ghost will play a live set before the screening of The Triplets of Belleville.  All groups have swing and 1930s influences, which ties into the French theme and time period of the animated film.

The film, which follows Madame Souza’s quest to rescue a Tour de France cyclist, also brings home the bike theme. Berlin, the coffee shop and café adjacent to Fingerprints, will serve up a special French-themed menu, complete with fruit and cheese platters, to compliment the movie and live tunes.

Other food that will be offered includes organic cold pressed nutritious elixirs from Rainbow Juices as well as fresh popcorn.

Summer and Music will conclude with Buskerfest, which will take place on Saturday, August 17 in the East Arts Village. Local artists, including Brother C and Sister J, The Barrelhousers, John Zell with Move, Fathers and Suns and Rainman, will compete on the backs of truck beds before the main acts hit the streets. After the winner is announced at 8PM, non-competing bands will play the main stage including The Fling, He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister, and Carly Ritter.

Summer and Music’s Bicycle Drive-in will take place Saturday, August 10 at 6PM in the Park[d] Plaza on 4th St. between Elm Ave. and Linden Ave. For more information, visit summerandmusic.com.
