Things to do in Long Beach this weekend including… a sprawling artisan market and a sound art festival

This weekend in Long Beach will give you ample opportunity to appreciate the city’s dynamic artists and institutions. From a massive arts celebration in Houghton Park with live music, demonstrations, installations and workshops to a more experimental one in San Pedro that’s designed to play with the way you experience sound. And for those who’d like a hand in creating the art, there’s a community mural event in Bixby Knolls.

For those who enjoy drinking on their weekends, there’s the LA Winefest, offering unlimited pours of wine, beer and other libations. And another very popular artisan market has returned on Sunday, the Patchwork Makers Festival with over 200 vendors selling their one-of-a-kind wares.

MOONLIGHT & MOVIES “HAIRSPRAY” – 2ND & PCH (Friday)

Catch a free outdoor movie screening of “Hairspray” at 2nd & PCH Friday, June 3 as part of the Movies & Moonlight series at the dining and shopping center.

The movie, which is projected on a giant inflatable screen on the north side of the center, begins at sunset (roughly 8 p.m. these days). Early arrival is encouraged so that you can stake your spot along the main street, Seaport Way, which is blocked off to traffic.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets as complimentary seating is limited and offered on a first-come-first-served basis. There will be heaters stationed outside, though getting a spot near those will also be first-come-first-served.

2nd & PCH is at 6400 Pacific Coast Highway.

SOUNDPEDRO – ANGELS GATE CULTURAL CENTER (Saturday)

The annual sound art festival, soundpedro, is back at Angels Gate Cultural Center this Saturday, offering visitors a wholly unique art experience designed to experiment with how we experience both art and sound.

This year’s festival according to organizers, “presents an immersive installation that celebrates Black-music innovators throughout history while acknowledging issues of cultural appropriation and Black erasure.” Expect live performances, soundscapes, and silent films throughout the entire hilltop at the cultural center, which is also celebrating its 40th year in San Pedro.

DAVE LOPEZ BOOK SIGNING – PHIL TRANI’S RESTAURANT (Saturday)

If you’ve ever tuned into KCBS on Channel 2 in the last 50 years, you’ve seen Dave Lopez. The legendary anchor and reporter has covered everything from fires and earthquakes, the O.J. Simpson trial, the World Series to political corruption, and now he’s written a book about his storied career and the many important people who’ve affected his life.

On Saturday, June 4 Dave Lopez will be hosting a book signing of his autobiography, “It’s a Great Life If You Don’t Weaken” at Phil Trani’s Restaurant where you can meet him and snag a copy of his new book.

GETTY + LONG BEACH SUMMER FESTIVAL – HOUGHTON PARK (Saturday & Sunday)

In honor of the Getty Center in Los Angeles turning 25, the museum, in conjunction with community partners, has organized a 10-part series of free outdoor art festivals all across the county, including Long Beach.

The Long Beach festival on June 4 and 5 will be held at Houghton Park and will feature a diverse cast of artists from across the city, but with an emphasis on North Long Beach.

Attendees will be met with a host of art installations and demonstrations from local art organizations such as Inspired LBC, the Long Beach Museum of Art and Rancho Los Cerritos. There will also be interactive workshops, such as a composting tutorial, live music, dance performances, a marching band, skateboard demonstrations and an artisan marketplace. The Getty will also set up a special immersive digital art experience of Getty collections, plus prizes, giveaways and photo booths.

Guests can also find a host of food trucks and other food and beverage vendors on site. The event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It’s free and open to the public. No RSVP required. Click here for more information on programing and scheduling.

LA WINEFEST – HARRY BRIDGES MEMORIAL PARK (Saturday & Sunday)

Back for its 17th year, the LA Winefest will be coming to the Harry Bridges Memorial Park at the Long Beach Harbor with unlimited pours of wine, beer and other libations Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5.

The two-day outdoor event draws thousands each year, according to organizers, with similar projections for this year’s celebration. Tickets buy guests a commemorative glass, which is used to try unlimited sample pours from over 30 wineries, six breweries, and dozens of other specialty cocktail and alcohol businesses slated to appear this year. More vendors are expected on the lineup closer to the event dates.

The festival will also feature food trucks, including Latin cuisine, Italian, Japanese and fusion foods. PATCHWORK SHOW MAKERS FESTIVAL – MARINE STADIUM (Sunday)

The Patchwork Show Makers Festival is a free biannual craft fair that sets up shop around Southern California offering local artists, crafters and designers a space to showcase their handmade goods in an affordable venue. Back for spring, the Patchwork Festival is this Sunday, June 5 at Marine Stadium Launch Ramps.

Long Beach is Patchwork’s biggest event each year, and Sunday’s festival will be no exception with over 200 makers and artists expected, selling a variety of goods such as handbags, jewelry, home goods, plants, ceramics, clothing for men, women, children, knits and crochets, apothecary items—a lot of stuff, you get it.

What’s more, every vendor selected in the show has been selected by a jury as a way to ensure that the festival offers a wide array of high-quality, one-of-a-kind gifts and products.

Attendees can also check out some craft activities, live music, and in the inevitability that all that shopping makes you hungry, rest assured there will be over 10 food trucks stationed on-site.

COMMUNITY MURAL PAINTING – TONY’S KITCHEN (Sunday)

Come make your mark at Tony’s Kitchen, Sunday, June 5 by participating in a community mural painting event at the new restaurant in Bixby Knolls.

With the help of StudioPick art director Greg Pickens, you’ll help create Tony’s Kitchen into a “colorful town” as part of their new redesign effort to make the business feel like a dreamy plaza. Supplies and materials will be provided, and those who help out will also be fed lunch. Plus, helpers will also have the chance to take home a $100 Tony’s Kitchen gift card as part of a raffle.
