INTERNATIONAL CITY THEATRE’S PRODUCTION OF “TICK, TICK…BOOM” (Friday – Sunday)

International City Theatre is opening its 2023 season this weekend with pop-rock musical “Tick, Tick…Boom,” premiering Feb. 17 at the Downtown theater.

The musical, written by Jonathon Larson, the creator of the lauded rock musical “Rent,” is a semi-autobiographical work about the playwright’s rocky career into performing arts. Though not a household name compared to his Tony-award-winning musical “Rent,” the musical was quite popular and performed in theaters all over the world. And adding to that success, the musical was recently adapted into a film by Lin-Manuel Miranda for Netflix.

Tickets for “Tick, Tick…Boom” range from $49-$55. Opening night on Feb. 17 will also include a post-show reception with the actors. Performances will go on until March 5.

The Cali Vibes music festival is returning for a second year at Marina Green Park with dozens of reggae, hip-hop and rock musical acts slated to perform, with landmark groups like Slightly Stoopid, Rebelution, Cypress Hill and Damian Marley to headline.

Last year’s lineup energized fans for its large bill featuring iconic acts like Wu-Tang Clan and all of the Marley brothers. And this year, the festival is keeping that momentum with special music performances by Long Beach’s very own Snoop Dogg on Saturday, Feb. 18, and soft rock multi-instrumentalist Jack Johnson on Sunday, Feb. 19.

The festival, which opens at noon all three days, will feature three stages with music from over 60 acts playing simultaneously. General and VIP tickets are still available for purchase and range from $160 for single-day passes to $475 for VIP three-day passes.

Marina Green Park is at 400 E. Shoreline Drive.

If you’ve ever been interested in owning and caring for a carnivorous plant, like a Venus flytrap, then Saturday’s workshop at Plantiitas nursery in Retro Row will give you the primer you need to take on the unique species.

Led by carnivorous plant expert Dan Birch, the hour-and-a-half workshop will cover all the necessary info that goes into maintaining that kind of plant. After the workshop, Plantiitas will be hosting a rare plant swap and market, so those who have some less common plants they’d like to trade can bring their healthy potted plants for some bartering.

Entry to the carnivorous plant workshop is $10. Click here to purchase tickets. For more information on the plant swap, click here.

Plantiitas is at 2011 E. Fourth St.

The Long Beach Japanese Cultural Center is hosting a special event celebrating the admired but little-known Japanese-American activist Sei Fujii.

In 2021, authors Fumiko Carole Fujita and Jeffrey Gee Chin published a biography of Fujii’s life, which included his best-known accomplishments: overturning the California Alien Land Law in 1952 and founding the Japanese American newspaper Kashu Mainichi (California Daily News).

The two-hour event will open with a screening of the short film “Lil Tokyo Reporter,” which was also about Fujii. Then, “Gilmore Girls” actress Keiko Agena will be doing a live reading of the new biography, followed by a panel discussion about the book.

Click here for more information on the event, which begins at 2 p.m.

The Long Beach Japanese Cultural Center is at 1766 Seabright Ave.
