Welcome to the weekend where no doubt Mother’s Day is looming on the brain. This week’s list, though, is all about events very unrelated to Mother’s Day because there is, in fact, a lot going on that isn’t all about your mom. She gets one whole day, OK?

So, this weekend we’ve found a few live music events, one that celebrates Filipino musicians and another at a waterfront brewery. We’ve also found a unique yard sale, a photography exhibition with rare photos featuring pivotal moments from the ’60s and an event that’s all about touching giant trucks and cars and such.

MOVIES & MOONLIGHT “THE GOONIES” – 2ND & PCH (Friday)

Catch a free outdoor movie screening of “The Goonies” at 2nd & PCH Friday, May 6 as part of the Movies & Moonlight series at the dining and shopping center.

The movie, which is projected on a giant inflatable screen on the north side of the center, begins at sunset (roughly 7:30 p.m. these days). Early arrival is encouraged so that you can stake your spot along the main street, Seaport Way, which is blocked off to traffic.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets as complimentary seating is limited and offered on a first-come-first-served basis. There will be heaters stationed outside, though getting a spot near those will also be first-come-first-served.

2nd & PCH is at 6400 Pacific Coast Highway.

SUGARLANDIA SESSIONS – KUBO (Friday)

A new concert series highlighting Filipino musicians and artists is launching at Kubo event space in Bixby Knolls Friday, May 6, they’ve dubbed the “Sugarlandia Sessions.”

The featured artist to kick off the series is opera and R&B artist Chloe Jane Reyes, who will be performing a lineup that highlights both of her musical backgrounds. Guests are encouraged to dress up in tropical attire. If you’re wondering why dress up, well, first off, a themed night is always fun. But second, we’d wager that it has something to do with the bar menu, which will feature booze from Don Papa Rum, a premium aged, single-island rum from the Philippines. Tiki cocktails, anyone?

The show is free to attend but RSVP is required, email [email protected] to book your spot.

WTFB CONCERT – BROUWERIJ WEST (Saturday)

If you’ve still never made it to San Pedro’s Brouwerij West, this Saturday, May 7 may be the time to check out the sprawling waterfront brewery that, once-upon-a-time, was a Port of Los Angeles Warehouse built by the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Progressive rock and funk cover band WTFB will be playing a free show at the brewery, performing a medley of covers by Phish, Yes, Zappa, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Gabriel-era Genesis and more. The brewery’s tasting room will be open, so you can opt to hang out inside the brewery with your brew or sip to the live set outside. Expect over a dozen beers and seltzers on tap, plus several food trucks brought in for the occasion to grab a bite from.

The event is all ages, runs from 7-10:30 p.m. and is free to attend.

Brouwerij West is at 110 E. 22nd St., San Pedro.

CAMBODIANS IN LONG BEACH LECTURE – BILLIE JEAN KING MAIN LIBRARY (Saturday)

In honor of Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May, the Billie Jean King Library has invited two special speakers to take audiences through the history of Long Beach’s vibrant and expansive Cambodian community which, if you weren’t aware, is the largest community of Cambodian persons outside of Southeast Asia.

The program will be presented by Susan Needham, a linguistic anthropologist at Cal State University Dominguez Hills and Karen Quintiliani, an applied anthropologist at Cal State Long Beach. Since 1988 the pair has been conducting research into the city’s Cambodian community that culminated in the 2008 release of their book “Cambodians in Long Beach.”

The event is from 3-4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7 and will be presented in the Miller Special Collections Room inside the library. The lecture is free to attend but RSVP is required, click here.

US SAILING CENTER ANNUAL YARD SALE – THE PENINSULA (Saturday)

Local sailing school, US Sailing Center, is doing a bit of spring cleaning this Saturday, May 7 and is inviting the community to check out “tons” of equipment they’ve got for sale. We’re talking sails, kayaks, paddleboards, inflatables, yachts, dinghies, outboards, hardware, safety gear and more.

Prices range as low as $500 for the smaller wares and can go upward of $9,000 (the 1977 Boston Whaler 17 Sport, for instance, is priced $9,999). If it sounds rather steep, we get it, but consider that most of this gear runs for often thousands more. Plus, all of the sales will go toward supporting Olympic, collegiate, high school, youth, disabled, and community sailing, according to organizers.

The yard sale is from 6 a.m. to noon.

JIM COKE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION – LONG BEACH SENIOR CENTER (Saturday)

When Long Beach photographer Jim Coke was just a student at UC Berkeley he laid witness to three years of pivotal moments in California’s counterculture movement of the late ’60s.

Some of those events he captured on film are the Griffith Park Human Be-In in March 1967; the Stop the Draft Week protest at the Oakland Army Induction Center in October 1967; Allen Ginsberg HOWLing at the USC campus in April 1967; Ravi Shankar at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967 and The Doors performing at LA’s first Rock Festival in July 1967—The Doors collection of photos is perhaps his most recognized work.

With those rare photographs, Coke created the exhibition “Know Justice/Know Peace California Counterculture 1966-70″ that locals will be able to see beginning May 7 through July 22 at the Long Beach Senior Center.

The opening reception from 2-5 p.m. on May 7 is in tandem with the Long Beach Gray Panthers’ 5th Annual Senior Fest and will also include an introduction by James Sauceda of CSULB, indigenous music by Martín Espino, poetry by Michael C. Ford (a friend of The Doors from UCLA days to the present), poetry by Fred Voss (Long Beach’s Blue Collar Bard), performance art by Christina Elaine Vasquez (of Dirty Patti) and more.

TOUCH-A-TRUCK – GRANADA BEACH (Saturday)

Back after a two-year hiatus, the annual Touch-A-Truck event, put on by community activist Justin Rudd and Councilwoman Suzie Price, returns to Granada Beach Saturday, May 7 where kids are given free rein to touch, climb, and explore more than 100 large trucks, tractors, police cars, fire trucks, boats, motorcycles and other big machines.

The event is organized is promised to be a safe, family-friendly playtime and show for all ages.

Touch-A-Truck from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. is free to attend but RSVP is required, click here.

SIP THEN SHOP – LONG BEACH BEER LAB (Saturday)

Shop handmade goods and gifts from over 15 local vendors Saturday, May 7 at Long Beach Beer Lab as part of their “Sip Then Shop” series.

From noon to 5 p.m. vendors will be at the brewery where visitors are encouraged to grab a bite and/or craft beer from the brewery while you shop. There will also be free games and activities as well as a raffle.
