Album cover of No Doubt's third studio album "Tragic Kingdom," released in 1995.

SATURDAY, JAN. 4

It’s never a simple, painless endeavor when Long Beach music aficionado Jesse Wilder puts together an Album Attack show. Going about the business of choosing the albums and procuring the venue—this time at The Prospector—is exhausting enough, but finding the right set of musicians that fit the particular sound and are actually available to practice the selected album to cover, front to back, for an evening of sonic nostalgia can be a mind-numbing challenge. But, as Wilder told our very own Steve Lowery in this excellent profile last Spring, he keeps putting on the curated cover gigs, “for the smiles, man.”

Marking their 25th anniversary, today Album Attack is taking on the entirety of No Doubt’s third studio album “Tragic Kingdom,” the record that brought you ’90s decade-defining hits, “Just A Girl” “Spider Webs,” “Sunday Morning,” and the iconically wistful “Don’t Speak.”

Another great thing: In case you haven’t heard, our staff here at the Long Beach Post have gone vegan for the month of January, or “Veganuary” as the zealots call it. All month long, we’ll be doing our part to steer clear of animal products, if not giving it up entirely, and so we’ve been going out of our way to find vegan alternatives to all our favorite foods along with dining at restaurants that are entirely plant-based or offer vegan substitutions.

Before the Album Attack show, why not fill up on tons of plant-based goodies where from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Vegan District at the Pike Outlets dozens of local and regional vendors will be peddling a smorgasbord of animal-friendly products and vegan food. We’re talking burritos, tacos, wings, Thai specialties, comfort food and desserts. We’re especially excited to sink our teeth into some soft, gourmet vegan cookies from San Diego’s own Maya’s Cookies. Don’t knock it until you try it.

Giving us a moment’s pause: Fun fact: since she was 12 years old, No Doubt’s lead singer Gwen Stefani follows a “mostly vegan” diet.

Album Attack presents No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom” tonight at 9 p.m. at The Prospector; 2400 E. 7th St. $5 cover will be collected at the door.

Vegan District Food Court and Marketplace runs from noon to 5 p.m. at The Pike Outlets; 95 S. Pine Ave. Vegan District is free to attend.
