Maybe you’ve heard it, strolling up the Shoreline Bike Path, a thudding syncopation carried by the ocean breeze. The sound is dull and faraway at first, but as you continue up the concrete sidewalk, entering the section of sand designated as Junipero Beach, you see them. They’re a modest sized group, many perched on folding chairs, others cross-legged in the sand, hands knocking and tapping on various percussion instruments, mostly drums, in unison. Some are dancing barefoot, others just sitting quietly, soaking in the rhythms.

This gathering of drummers is known as the Drum Ellipse and, every Tuesday since 2014 they’ve organized a community drum circle inviting anyone to join in on the improvised musical experience. Aside from the evident fun of spending an hour banging it out on a bongo, somewhat overlooked is how therapeutic a shared musical activity can be. It’s a moment to be completely present, an opportunity to channel your feelings into creative expression, regardless of your own musical expertise. It’s also a hell of a potent stress-reliever, much better than the lavender scented candle your mom bought you last Christmas.

The drum circle starts at 7:30 p.m. at Junipero Beach. The group gathers at the end of the seawall/sidewalk parking lot where the parking ends and the beach starts. Drums and other percussion instruments will be provided, but a good ol’ paint bucket from your garage and a wooden spoon from your kitchen will do just nicely.

Another great thing: Solos are strictly prohibited.

Giving us a moment’s pause:
