This Saturday more than 120 zine makers, artists and DIY aficionados from all over the region will descend on the Expo Arts Center for the 4th annual Long Beach Zine Fest. Previously held at the Museum of Latin American Art, the move to Expo gives more room for the print-focused showcase of independent publishing and self expression to take place.

Three local zine makers, Anel Rodriguez, Shea Vititow and Dulce Soledad Ibarra, use the modest pamphlets to share their interests with readers in profound ways.

Rodriguez’ zine, Corazon Vagabunda, embodies her Mexican heritage and takes readers on a trip to Guadalajara, Mexico City, among other cities, and explores her family’s history migrating to the United States. Her zines include photos of pyramids, murals, portraits and even a special ceviche recipe. Vititow, director of local art collective Grab Bag Studio, shows her own photos of the Southern California region, but also highlights the works of other artists and cultures.

And Ibarra, who channels her personal life through drawings of her rabbit Echo in her zine, insecure tooth, shares with viewers the joys and frustrations of moving to Long Beach from Chino, her qualms with body dysmorphia and her love for sad karaoke.

Alongside stacks on stacks of zines, guests can expect an expanded area for vendors, including a vegan food court, live music from local bands, an all-day makerspace hosted by the Long Beach Public Library and a variety of panels and workshops responding to today’s social and political climate.

Long Beach Zine Fest runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, check out LBZF’s website here.

Expo Arts Center is located at 4321 Atlantic Ave.
