It is a humbling, and sometimes daunting, task to keep up with all the cultural and artistic goings on in the City. Here, then, is a sampling of some stuff going on this weekend
Tonight at the monthly Bixby Knolls First Friday, Gallery Expo will feature The Code Exhibit, an exciting collaboration with Long Beach Sister City, Izmir, in Turkey, featuring 180 works by 90 Turkish artists. In the main hall of the Expo Arts Center, Expo Gallery is presenting In An Abstract World, which features work by local artists. The official receptions for both shows is on August 20th.
Also, be sure to catch C#4 (aka the C Sharp Quartet) led by avant garde reed master Charles Sharp, who will be joined by Alan Cook on drums. They’ll be playing in front of the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on the West side of Atlantic, just North of Carson. The festivities extend from Expo on the North all the way South to Bixby.
I’m not sure I can in good conscience recommend this next one but, for people who will watch pretty much anything, this is for you. The Long Beach Parks, Recreation, and Marine Department is presenting TRON Legacy at Hartwell Park tonight at 8 PM. This event is free. The Movie in the Park series continues through September 1st, with screenings at parks all over the City.
If you’re in the mood for laughs, and don’t mind offensive humor, you can try to score a ticket to see Lisa Lampanelli tonight at the Long Beach Terrace Theater. If you want your comedy clean, the Long Beach Playhouse offers Clean Comedy Night on the first Sunday of every month. Tickets are $10.
If you like your theater with dinner, consider The Curtain Call Killer this Sunday at the Reef. Presented by Act Out Mystery Theatre, audience members may be recruited to participate in a variety of ways.
The Museum of Latin American Art presents Murals Under The Stars with Gregorio Luke this Sunday evening at MOLAA. He’ll be hosting The Return of Los Tres Grandes, where murals by Siqueiros, Rivera and Orozco will be projected onto an 1800 square foot wall as Luke shares their hsitory and meaning.
Also on Sunday is the first installment of the Alamitos Bay Landing Summer Concert Series, featuring Super Diamond. Luxury dining packages and general admission tickets are still available, and proceeds from the event go to support the Team Spirit Breast and Ovarian Cancer 10k Walk, taking place September 24th.
Again, this is just a small sampling of the many great events that are taking place this weekend. Visit LimeLightLB.org for more listings.
