ArtPEACE and Charter Communications invite Long Beach youth and Long Beach-based organizations, producers, and artists to be a part of a community wide effort to create positive change for young people through Video. Youth 18 years and younger are invited to submit 30-second video Public Service Announcements by May 21, 2009 to win a total of $1,000 in cash prizes.
ArtPEACE has developed a creative and juried framework for youth 18 years old or younger to work with creative mentors to develop video PSAs. Youth are encouraged to work with an adult mentor, but mentors are not required for participation. ArtPEACE judges will include established artists, video producers and community leaders. Youth will develop 30- second Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) with any of the following themes as guides:
• Embracing and valuing diversity
• Helping to prevent youth and gang violence
• Educating the community about cultural awareness and inclusion
• Fostering messages against hate crimes and tensions
• Improving Intercultural and interracial communication that promotes community harmony
• Peaceful conflict resolution
• Peace through creativity
Selected works will be used as PSA’s on local cable channels on the Charter Communications system. The PSA’s will also be uploaded to YouTube for a longer life on www.thecreativitynetwork.org and other websites. Selected PSA’s will also be presented at a Private Screening Party in June to celebrate participants in the ArtPEACE Video program.
Winning PSA’s will receive cash prizes of $500 for First Place, $300 for Second Place and $200 for Third Place, and will be announced on May 30, 2009 at the Unity Festival. Judging will be based on creative use of the themes, originality, positive message, and a high level of youth involvement.
Entry forms are required and may be downloaded from www.thecreativitynetwork.org/artpeace.htm. You may also receive the registration forms by e-mailing [email protected] or by calling (562) 304-3869. Deadline for entry is Thursday, May 21, 2009.
ABOUT ARTPEACE
ArtPEACE is a unique partnership between The Creativity Network and the City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program that promotes creative collaborations between Long Beach artists and our youth through artistic mentoring to develop works of art that promote the message of peace.
Our youth are an important segment of our society; one-third of our city’s population is under the age of 18. We know that youth are creative and capable when provided with encouragement, support, mentoring and creative outlets for expression.
The eight-month long campaign began October 1, 2008 and is scheduled to culminate with the Unity Festival on May 30, 2009. The goals of the ArtPEACE campaign are:
• Utilize the Arts for positive expression and self-respect
• Communicate messages of peace, unity, respect and harmony
• Help children to grow creatively, aesthetically, socially and intellectually
• Promote inter-cultural exchanges and understanding
• Build meaningful relationships between adults and youth through creative mentoring
