A 13-year-old girl was killed Saturday while on vacation in Laughlin, Nevada, when she was run over by a boat being steered by a Long Beach man who was intoxicated, leaving members of the Long Beach and Southland communities reeling. 

Isa Rached, the uncle of 13-year-old Guadalupe “Monse” Granados said he and his family are distraught by the news. He said the situation was even more tragic, given the fact that Granados’ mother died in a fatal car accident years ago, also involving a drunk driver.

“She was such a good girl,” said Rached of Granados, who lived in San Bernardino. “She was very outgoing, very smart.”

Rached said his brother was actually Granados’ stepfather, but had adopted Granados in the aftermath of her mother’s death. 

The incident occurred when a Long Beach man, 42-year-old Kevin Morgan, was operating his 20-foot ski boat at a beach in Nevada called Davis Camp, when he struck a Jet Ski operated by Monica Garcia, 46, from Colton, CA, the Bullhead City Police Department (BCPD) confirmed.

Two girls, 13-year-old Granados and an eight-year-old unidentified female were on the Jet Ski at the time.

According to a release from the BCPD, Granados succumbed to head trauma sustained during the incident at the Western Arizona Regional Medical Center (WARMC). The eight-year-old was transported there as well, after sustaining a large laceration to the left arm, broken left hand, forearm and upper arm.

Garcia sustained a collapsed lung and a fractured left arm, according to the report.

Morgan was arrested for operating a watercraft while intoxicated. The collision is still under investigation.

Rached said the family has planned a memorial service for Friday, July 8 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at the San Bernardino Mission Chapel. The family has also set up a GoFundMe page to pay for Granados’ funeral expenses. As of Tuesday around 4:00PM, $3,320 of the $20,000 requested had been raised.

Rached said the last time he saw her was the Fourth of July of last year, where he was impressed by how she had matured into a young woman. 

“She was so sweet,” he said. “She had a lot of friends…such a good girl.”
