Long Beach’s second annual Affordable Housing Week begins today, kicking off five days worth of events and speeches to raise awareness for efforts being made by the city and other agencies to put families into homes, the Press-Telegram reports.

Overcrowding has been a notorious problem, and the city aims to do something about it with redevelopment meant to provide affordable places to live to families of four or more.  The crown jewel of the week will be the grand opening of a new housing complex on 3rd Street near Cesar Chavez Park, on Tuesday.  The complex – Puerto del Sol – features 64 units which include plenty of necessities and luxuries for families making roughly half of the median area income.
