All televisions will switch to digital broadcasting in mid-February, but don’t just dump the old tube n’ rabbit-ears in the trash. Take old televisions and other electronics to the 3rd Annual Electronic Waste Drive on Saturday, February 7. The drive will be held from 10:00am-1:00pm on the corner of Broadway & Long Beach Blvd., and accept all types of “E-Waste.” More than 37 tons were collected during the past two drives.
E-waste refers to all kinds of electronic devices ranging from computer monitors and DVD players to cellular phones and LCD clocks. It is illegal to dispose of E-waste in the trash.
“All cell phones will be donated to Interval House and Su Casa Domestic Abuse Network to help battered spouses and children successfully transition out of abusive homes,” said a press release from 2nd District City Councilmember Suja Lowenthal, who co-sponsors the E-waste drive with the Environmental Services Bureau.
Old televisions contain up to eight pounds of lead, which eventually enter and contaminate groundwater is disposed of properly. Hazardous waste such as paint, fluorescent light bulbs and batteries will not be accepted at the drive.
