In these difficult times, as local schools, daycare centers and nurseries statewide face drastic budget cuts and are forced to deal with the prospects of cutting enrollment or employees, Long Beach’s own Children Today will be able to continue providing curriculum and program support to two childcare centers thanks to a private $60,000 donation.

John C. Wavell decided to donate the money to invest in underserved families.  Himself a graduate of Long Beach’s St. Anthony High, Wavell knows well the benefits of a quality education – he would go on to Stanford University and now owns Wavell-Huber Wood Products in Los Alamitos.

The donation will benefit the Play House North and Play House West, two centers which serve to educate and care for children experiencing homelessness, so that their parents may focus on finding work or assistance during the day.

“This gift will have a wide impact on Children Today’s clients,” said Executive Director Dora Jacildo. “Each infant, toddler, and preschooler will benefit from Mr. Wavell’s generosity and commitment to our mission.”

Children Today also raised more than $240,000 in December during their 11th annual Holiday Cheer silent auction.
