A 65-year-old Long Beach man died hours after he drove his vehicle off the road and into a pole Tuesday morning, police said.

When officers arrived at the scene of the crash at about 8 a.m. on Orange Avenue north of Wardlow Road, they found the man was the only occupant of the car, a 2005 Honda. Paramedics took him to a hospital with what initially appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the man was driving northbound on Orange Avenue at Wardlow Road when he drove his car off the road and into a pole.

Hospital staff notified police at about 3:30 p.m. that the driver died at the hospital. Police don’t yet know if the man died from injuries sustained during the accident. The county coroner’s office will determine his cause of death and identity.
