Long Beach Police Department officers searched for a gunman today after getting reports of shots being fired near the intersection of Seventh Street and Cerritos Avenue, authorities said.
The shooting was reported around 11:45 a.m. Thursday. LBPD officers found shell casings at the scene and began searching for suspects in the area, which is just north of Franklin Middle School, LBPD spokesman Richard Mejia said.
No suspect was located and investigators are unsure of what the motive for the shooting was. No injuries were reported, Mejia said.
Evelyn Somoza, a spokesperson for the Long Beach Unified School District, said that Franklin Middle School was briefly on lockdown due to the search.
“Students at the school were safe, but authorities locked down the school as a precaution,” Somoza said in an email.
Traffic on Seventh Street was blocked from Orange Avenue to Alamitos Avenue while officers combed through the area. Seventh Street is one of the main arterial roads that runs east to west through the city.
Seventh Street was reopened for vehicle traffic around 1 p.m., police said.
