5:15pm | The Long Beach Airport Advisory Committee will hold a special meeting directly following its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday to consider a request that the airport’s new parking structure be dedicated to the man who completed the first transcontinental flight in the United States, landing his plane in Long Beach at the end of the Pine Street Pier.

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske issued the request.

She has for almost a year been spearheading efforts to ensure that the Long Beach community is made aware of and acknowledges the 100th anniversary of Calbraith Perry “Cal” Rogers’ historic Dec. 10, 1911, flight. A calendar of events running from September through December is currently being put together by the Transcon Committee, which is charged with planning out the anniversary celebration.

Members of the public will be given the chance to speak on Schipske’s proposal during the special meeting.

The committee’s regularly scheduled meeting is set for 5 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at Skylinks Municipal Golf Course , 4800 E. Wardlow Road.
