3:45pm | The city of Long Beach is opening a new dog park in Wrigley Heights on Saturday, and residents are invited to come out and witness the park’s dedication.
The Wrigley Heights Dog Park, which is located at 3401 Golden Ave. on the northwest corner of Golden and Wardlow Road, sits on a parcel of land that was formerly home to the police horse stable. More recently, the land sat unused as a “passive open space,” according to information provided by City Hall spokesman Ed Kamlan.
“The Wrigley and West Long Beach areas are desperate for increased access to open space for recreation,” said Councilman James Johnson in a statement. “The Wrigley Heights Dog Park will be an example of how to maximize the usage of available open space to serve the community.”
The park is located in the Seventh District, which Johnson represents on the City Council.
At just under 2 acres, the park is the city’s largest that caters to dogs.
Kamlan said the dog park features shade trees, fencing, a mulch ground covering and an area for unleashing or holding dogs when entering or leaving. Dog pick-up bags, separate trash receptacles, benches and a water fountain are also available.
The dedication ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.on Saturday, May 21. The event is being sponsored by Johnson’s office and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine.
