State Senator Alan Lowenthal – whose 27th District serves Long Beach and other surrounding communities – will run for California Lieutenant Governor in the 2010 election, his office confirmed this afternoon. Sen. Lowenthal has set up an exploratory committee in order to raise funds that may be put toward a future campaign.
“Right now all he’s done is set up a campaign committee,” said John Casey, Lowenthal’s Chief of Staff. “It’ll allow him to raise money to open up a campaign account. The next step would be for him to file to run.”
Exploratory committees are sometimes set up just to test the waters and examine whether enough funding can be raised, but Casey says that the decision has already been made.
“It’s going to happen,” he said. “[Sen. Lowenthal] has made that commitment and he’s going to run.”
Sen. Lowenthal recently won re-election to his seat back in November and spoke with the lbpost.com here about his future plans as State Senator. A former CSULB professor, Lowenthal has used his career in politics to lobby for improvements in education, healthcare and infrastructure.
Current Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi has been campaigning to run for Governor in 2010 when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s term will run out.
