As it adds new routes and nonstop service out of its Seattle, Wash. hub, Alaska Airlines announced last week it would soon be terminating service on “underperforming routes,” including its flights between Long Beach and Portland, Ore.
Starting August 23, the Seattle-based company’s single daily Long Beach flight from and to Portland’s PDX airport will cease, leaving Alaska’s presence at LGB solely for its remaining service to Seattle’s SEA.
Alaska also announced it would be dropping its service between Los Angeles and San Jose, which it plans to end April 5.
“While it’s unfortunate to eliminate service to any market, these moves are part of our strategy to strengthen the performance of Alaska Airlines’ network,” said Andrew Harrison, Alaska’s vice president of planning and revenue management, in a statement. “By exiting underperforming markets, we’re able to redeploy aircraft and begin flying to new and underserved markets from Seattle.”
Alaska will continue to offer its three daily flights between LGB and SEA and service between LGB and PDX will continue to be offered by JetBlue, which has two departing flights to the Pacific Northwest city daily.
“The airline industry is a dynamic environment in which route changes are common,” LGB officials said. “Long Beach will continue to have service to Portland as JetBlue has four flights to the Pacific Northwest daily. As such, there should be no loss in passenger traffic to LGB.”
