Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) will host Ei-ichi Negishi, the famed Japanese chemist and Nobel Prize winner, as part of its 35th annual Nobel Laureate Lecture series.
Negishi will be giving two lectures: a general lecture entitled “Magical Power of d-Block Transition Metals—Past, Present and Future,” and a technical lecture “General and Highly Enantioselective (≥ 99% ee) Catalytic C-C Bond Formation via ZACA Reaction.”
Negishi was awarded the Nobel in 2010, a prize he shared with Richard F. Heck of the University of Delaware and Akira Suzuki from Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. The trio for palladium-catalyzed cross couplings in organic synthesis, which has vastly improved the way in which organic chemists create sophisticated chemicals, such the creation of carbon-based molecules that are as complex as those in nature. The results have been staggering, from the creation of antibiotics to light-emitting diodes.
The lectures are free and open to the public; however, members outside of the university can attend on a space-available basis and must purchase a guest parking permit at parking lot kiosks.
Both lectures will take place on Tuesday, April 8. The general lecture will occur from 11AM to Noon while the technical lecture will occur from 5PM to 7PM; both will take place at the University Student Union.
