In two weeks beer and wine will once again be sold to fans attending Long Beach State University sporting events in the Walter Pyramid, 12 years after the CSU issued a 2005 executive order banning the sale of alcoholic beverages in on-campus venues system-wide.

That prohibition, known as Executive Order 966, was overturned this summer when Executive Order 1109 was issued June 30, allowing all 23 CSU campuses to decide whether to reinstate alcohol sales in on-campus venues, LBSU officials said in a release issued Tuesday.

That order came after officials examined the practices of numerous other higher education institutions.

“We want to provide the same kind of amenities that fans expect now at sporting events such as Dodgers or Lakers games,” said LBSU Athletics Director Andy Fee in a statement. “One of my focuses when I took the job was to really engage with our fans in a different way than before in hopes to improve the fan experience and the gameday experience.”

Fee added that this change will be the first of several that the university will be implementing over the next year with officials currently discussing the possibility of alcohol sales at other ticketed events on campus at George Allen Field, the LBSU Softball Complex, the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Complex and Jack Rose Track.

Blair Field was always exempt from the previous executive order since it is an off-campus facility.

LBSU is working with 49er shops as well as the state Alcoholic Beverage Control department to make sure that all regulations are followed and that a safe and responsible environment be maintained at all LBSU sporting events under this new policy, officials stated.

Beginning October 27, sales will take place at both concession stands within the Pyramid when LBSU’s women’s volleyball team plays against UC Davis and then will continue throughout the season.
