9:01am | A local theatre company is calling all writers to submit an original script to be considered for production during a theatre festival this fall In Long Beach.

Alive Theatre is now taking submissions for the 2011 edition acclaimed new-works show, Annual Long Beach Poppin’ Play Festival, which will be held in October during Long Beach Arts Month.

Submissions will be accepted through Monday, April 25, after which time all submissions will be reviewed by members of the company, who will narrow down the field to those works that will comprise the festival’s lineup.

There is no specific limit on how many pieces will be performed as part of the Poppin’ Play Festival, according to Alive. However, the company is seeking the ” very best that local writers have to offer.”

Submissions of a completed draft or treatment of a play that has never been produced will be accepted from writers who live in Los Angeles and Orange counties, with particular interest in Long beach writers. All submissions must include a single-page-or-less synopsis and a completed play submission form, which can be downloaded by clicking here.

Writers must be willing and able to attend six to eight workshop dates in June, July and August. June-August. All submitted works must also be based on the themes of dreams, time, or vulnerability. A read-through and preliminary writers workshops will be held for those who submit a work on the evenings of Wednesday, June 8, and Thursday, June 9, and all writers are strongly encouraged to attend.

“Bring us the best of what you’ve got on these themes, and keep in mind [that] Alive Theatre is a group of outsider artists interested in pushing the envelope of independent theatrical productions,” reads a release provided by Alive. ” We’re looking for liberal and creative interpretations on the above themes, and want to discourage simple A-to-B thinking. Show us what you’ve got.”

Those planning to submit a play should keep in mind that because their piece, should it be accepted, will be part of a larger festival, meaning set design and production will be limited.  Submissions that feature minimal design and production needs will stand a better chance at being selected, according to the theatre company.

All submissions should be sent via e-mail to [email protected] or mailed to 555 E. Third St., Long Beach, CA 90802.

Selections will be announced the week of June 13.

Questions should be directed to [email protected], and more information can be obtained by visiting AliveTheatre.org.
