Authorities said they have identified the man responsible for the Feb. 2 shooting death of 31-year-old Signal Hill resident Nashon Wall near Poly High.

Saeed Wheeler, 20, was already in custody on an unrelated charge after being arrested Feb. 24 by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to inmate records.

Long Beach police were made aware of Wheeler being in custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest on March 9.

At the time of the shooting, police said Wall was sitting in his car sometime around 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 2 near Poly High School when he was approached by multiple suspects. At least one of the suspects produced a gun and shot Wall, the LBPD said.

When police arrived, they found Wall lying in the roadway next to his car. Officers rendered aid to Wall until he was transported by Long Beach Fire personnel to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Meanwhile, police say the suspects fled to a nearby apartment complex, prompting a SWAT team to respond and serve a search warrant at the building that evening. Officers found firearms evidence during the search but no suspects.

Wheeler has now been charged with one count of murder, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of unlawful possession of ammunition, the LBPD said. Wheeler is being detained at a Los Angeles jail, with bail set at $3.1 million, police said.

He is due in court this Friday for arraignment, court records show.

The investigation is still ongoing as authorities work to determine a motive and whether Wall and Wheeler knew each other.
