Police on Wednesday said they were still searching for at least two additional suspects who fled a gas station near the Rose Park neighborhood after they attempted to steal large quantities of fuel.

On March 10, police were flagged down at around 1:30 p.m. near a Chevron gas station located on the corner of the 700 block of Redondo Avenue after a grand theft was reported, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

By the time police arrived, the suspects fled the scene. But shortly after, police arrested Las Vegas resident Amador Blanco Raidel, 27, on suspicion of grand theft and conspiracy to commit a crime, LBPD spokesperson Richard Mejia said.

He was held on zero-dollar bail and released the following morning on his own recognizance, inmate records show.

Mejia said that from what detectives have gathered, Raidel and at least two other suspects were trying to steal gas in an attempt to sell it for profit. Three vehicles were towed in connection to the crime, Mejia said.

The investigation is ongoing as detectives are working to pursue leads to identify the other suspects involved, Mejia said.

The attempted theft last week comes as fuel prices have skyrocketed across the country, with Long Beach and Los Angeles seeing record price increases.

LBPD is advising gas station workers to look for trucks or other large vehicles that are parked at a gas pump for a long period of time, in addition to vehicles that may be stopped over the gas intake cover on the ground.

Mejia said motorists and car owners should consider buying a locking cap to prevent gas thefts.

The manager of the Chevron gas station declined to comment on how the suspected thieves managed to access the fuel pumps without paying, saying the owner barred him from speaking about the incident.
