Authorities today identified a man who was fatally shot last week in Long Beach as detectives continued their investigation into the crime.

Officers sent to the 900 block of Maine Avenue around 11 p.m. Tuesday on a report of shots fired found a man with multiple gunshot wounds lying on the ground near Loma Vista Drive and Corvo Court, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Paramedics took the wounded man to a hospital, where he died. On Monday, the man was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as Canaan Oryema Okatch, 26, who was homeless.

According to the preliminary investigation, several males approached Okatch and began physically assaulting him. One suspect then fired multiple gunshots at him, police said.

No arrests were reported, and no descriptions of the suspects were released. A motive for the crime was not known, police said.
