Police announced they have arrested a man suspected of threatening a political rally scheduled this evening in Long Beach.

Long Beach police declined to specify exactly what event the threat targeted, but the timing coincides with a rally at Long Beach City College for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

“It was an online threat of violence,” Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy said. “It was targeted at a political rally that was taking place this evening.”

A spokesman for Sanders’ campaign declined to answer questions about the threat, saying the organization does not comment on matters of security. LBCC didn’t immediately respond to messages.

Police said they were notified about the potential threat by a “concerned community member” on Sunday.

The next day, detectives identified Jose Rafael Guzman, a 27-year-old mechanic from Huntington Park, as a suspect, according to the LBPD.

They arrested him at his home around 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to a jail log. Guzman has since been released on $50,000 bail, police said.

Messages left at phone numbers listed for his address weren’t immediately returned.

It wasn’t clear if Guzman had the means to carry out any alleged threat, and police declined to say what exactly he’s accused of saying. Police said they did not find any weapons at the house

“We take all potential threats of violence very seriously and thoroughly investigate all reported incidents,” said Chief Robert Luna in a statement. “Our department will remain vigilant and continue to be visible to ensure the safety of our community.”

In an announcement about Guzman’s arrest, police said they’ve already boosted patrols in response to this weekends mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

“These efforts will continue in the upcoming days,” police said.
