As scorching heat gave way to a cool summer night, auto-nuts of the past, present and future were treated to an array of beautifully maintained classic cars and the most ferocious dragsters ever built at the Bixby Knolls Dragster Expo and Car Show.
“This year was better than ever,” said Councilmember Rae Gabelich, who organized the 3rd Annual show in her 8th District. “We’re growing in the right direction. We changed the hours a little bit this year and we gave a better show for everybody.”
It was quite a show, with dozens of classic cars lining the streets of Atlantic Ave. and the racers taking up the main central area. Around 8:30, organizers gave the racing crews the signal to light up, and fourteen dragsters exploded to life, rattling eardrums and igniting the octance inside of everyone present.
Gabelich called the spectacle “Exhilerating.” The announcer warned spectators that they would be able to smell the fuel and nitro being burned as the cars revved to their limits with flames shooting into the night, but he was wrong. The burning fuel was so thick and potent in the air that you could taste it. Like gasoline to a spectator; like candy to a car nut.
