The City Council overwhelmingly supported a reconnaissance study of the Long Beach Breakwater by a 7-1 vote at Tuesday’s meeting. The legislation, sponsored by Councilmembers Patrick O’Donnell and Rae Gabelich, would designate up to $100,000 of city funds to pay for the study.

Port Commission President Mario Cordero spoke before the Council and offered up to $50,000 in matching support for the study. Also speaking were members of the Surfrider Foundation, environmental activists and concerned residents and homeowners.

This is good news for our beaches, our city and for the concerned homeowners on the Peninsula and along the shore. The study will address some of the important questions that need to answered about beach erosion and water quality.

Congratulations to Surfrider and the hundreds of community activists that have been working on this issue for decades. Let’s hope that the study begins as soon as possible.
