Tonight, the City Council will be voting to fund a $100,000 study on the possible reconfiguration of the Long Beach Breakwater. The study would address some of the questions that need to be answered on the Breakwater.

Would reconfiguration improve water quality? Would reconfiguration damage homes or create beach erosion? These are important questions that can only be answered with all of the information and facts.

If the city can spend millions on consultants, it can certainly spend $100,000 on one of the most important environmental issues facing our city.

Let’s encourage our Councilmembers to support a study and vote yes.

The study, which was approved by the Council in 2005 but remains unfunded, would help determine the federal government’s interest in a full assessment of the breakwater’s reconfiguration.

The credit for putting the item on the agenda belongs to Councilmembers Rae Gabelich and Patrick O’Donnell.

Here’s what Gabelich had to say on the issue-

A study that could invigorate our shoreline is all we’re asking for. We must be able to make an informed decision on how best to restore the quality of our water and once again make our beaches a destination. This study will give us the necessary tools.”

I just sent an email to my Councilmember to support the study, you should do the same.
