A special screening of the film “Brian Banks,” which tells the story of a Poly High School student wrongly convicted of rape, will be shown in Long Beach on Wednesday.

The sold-out event at the Edwards theater in the Long Beach Towne Center will feature a red carpet with the stars of the film, including Aldis Hodges, Greg Kinnear and Sherri Shepherd among others. Brian Banks and Justin Brooks, who helped exonerate Banks, will also be in attendance.

The film follows Banks’ quest to become exonerated with the help of the California Innocence Project. He’s spoken about his experience numerous times, including in Long Beach in 2015.

Banks pleaded no contest to rape in 2002 after being falsely accused by his classmate. He was a junior in high school and had already committed to playing football for USC.

He was imprisoned for more than five years with a five-year parole during which he was ordered to wear a GPS tracking device.

Four years into his parole sentence, he was able to prove his innocence when he recorded his accuser admitting to lying about the rape. She had reached out to make amends.

In 2012, his conviction was overturned with the help of the California Innocence Project.

The film will be widely released Aug. 9.
