9:46am | Just what this world needs… another acronym, but that may be about the only mundane thing you’ll find in downtown Long Beach on Saturday.

The inaugural Long Beach Downtown Art Walk (LBDAW) on Saturday features 17 art galleries throughout downtown Long Beach opening their doors for a self-guided tour.

Similar to the Los Angeles Downtown Art Walk, LBDAW is a free, self-guided art event in an evening once a month in which people, or patrons, are encouraged to roam from gallery to gallery viewing or purchasing art.

LBDAW will take place on the second Saturday of each month from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Organizers “soft-launched” LBDAW in January with little promotion to work out the kinks, and the event attracted crowds of people to numerous galleries, according to organizers.

“I believe Long Beach is at the core of a new art scene in the south bay,” said Liza Simone, co-founder of LBDAW and founder of Phantom Galleries Los Angeles County. LBDAW was established by Simone in partnership with the Arts Council for Long Beach and community volunteers.

The majority of the participating galleries are organized through Phantom Galleries Long Beach—another acronym, PGLB. PGLB spaces are organized and curated by independent curators, arts organizations and regional artists, and new galleries are opening up in the area and joining in.

“The entire effort to coordinate this monthly event is volunteer-driven,” said Craig Watson, Executive Director of the Arts Council for Long Beach.

Anyone interested in being part of LBDAW, as a volunteer committee member, artist, curator or gallery should contact Simone at [email protected].
